Published in 1970 in the “Mutations Orientations” series, Mobile Architecture bears the subtitle “Towards a City Designed by Its Inhabitants”.
In this seminal work, Yona Friedman presents the principles of his concept of mobile architecture, first developed in the late 1950s. Rejecting rigid forms of urban planning, he advocates cities capable of evolving according to the needs and choices of their inhabitants.
The book opens with a dictionary of the key concepts of mobile architecture before examining urban planning, population growth, citizen participation and new methods for architects and planners.
Far more than an architectural treatise, this volume is a visionary reflection on freedom, participation and the future of cities.

About the author :
Yona Friedman (1923-2020) was one of the most innovative architectural thinkers of the twentieth century. A survivor of the Second World War, he devoted much of his career to promoting forms of architecture that would give greater freedom and responsibility to ordinary citizens.
Why this book is unusual :
This book challenges the traditional idea that cities should be designed exclusively by architects and planners. Instead, Friedman proposes an adaptable urban environment shaped directly by its inhabitants.
Why this book remains relevant today :
Current debates on housing, sustainable cities, citizen participation and flexible urban environments make Friedman's ideas remarkably topical more than half a century after their formulation.
