Published in 1957 in the “Les Lettres Nouvelles” series, this first volume of Witold Gombrowicz's Journal covers the years 1953 to 1956, during his long exile in Argentina.
Far more than a personal diary, the book brings together literary reflections, observations on society, philosophical meditations, portraits, memories and penetrating analyses of the human condition.
Through a free, incisive and highly original style, Gombrowicz explores the relationship between the individual and society, European culture, exile, artistic creation and the mechanisms of intellectual domination.
Widely regarded as one of the major literary journals of the twentieth century.

About the author :
When the Second World War broke out in 1939, Witold Gombrowicz happened to be in Argentina on what was meant to be a short trip. He ultimately remained there for nearly twenty-four years, often living in modest circumstances. Most of his Journal was written during this long exile.
For Gombrowicz, writing meant constantly challenging accepted ideas, including his own. For many years, the Journal served as his true literary workshop. It was there that he freely tested ideas, intuitions and intellectual provocations before some of them found their way into his other works.
This freedom explains the Journal's unique tone: at once intimate, philosophical, literary and intensely alive.
About the book :
The Journal was first published in installments in Kultura, the leading review of the Polish intellectual community in exile.
Within its pages, Gombrowicz gradually developed a literary form entirely his own, situated somewhere between the essay, the pamphlet and autobiography.
