Published in 1967 in the “Bibliothèque Médiations” series, History of French Painting, Volume II by Pierre Francastel explores the development of French painting from Jacques-Louis David to Pablo Picasso.
The book follows the major artistic movements that shaped modern art, including Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, the Nabis, Fauvism and Cubism. Rather than presenting a simple chronology, Francastel examines the relationship between artistic creation and the social, political and cultural transformations of modern France.
Illustrated throughout and supplemented by biographical notes by Maurice Bex and a bibliography, the volume provides an accessible introduction to the evolution of French painting from the late eighteenth century to the twentieth century.
