Published in 1969 by Plon, Tomorrow Belongs to You brings together texts written by Georges Bernanos between 1940 and 1947, during one of the most dramatic periods of modern history.
The collection includes reflections on Free France, Europe, youth, moral responsibility and the future of civilization. It also contains the lesser-known essay “In the Friendship of Léon Bloy”, written in 1947.
More than a historical document, the volume is a powerful meditation on freedom, conscience and human responsibility.

About the author
Georges Bernanos (1888-1948) was one of the major figures of twentieth-century French literature. Best known for novels such as Diary of a Country Priest and Under the Sun of Satan, he was also an influential essayist and public intellectual.
During the Second World War, while living in Brazil, he became one of the most powerful voices defending freedom and moral independence.
About the book
Most of the texts included in this volume were written during Bernanos's years in exile. From a distance, he reflected on the fate of France, Europe and modern civilization with remarkable clarity and conviction.
Why this book is unusual
The volume reveals a side of Bernanos often overshadowed by his novels: the moral thinker, political observer and passionate defender of individual freedom.
Why this book remains relevant today
Questions concerning democracy, personal responsibility, youth and the future of society remain highly relevant, giving these texts a striking contemporary resonance.
